Cartoon #143 Transmonument

143

The homomonument is quite famous – and serves as the spot for most LGBT memorials in the Netherlands at this moment. I’m thinking: isn’t it time for a separate transgender monument? Because trans issues differ from LGB ones. As far as I know there isn’t one yet – so I’ve just made up and designed one for this cartoon.
+ There’s always a problem on who ‘belongs’ and who doesn’t – at any kind of memorial I guess. Within the transgender community there are still debates on who belongs inside and who doesn’t. Quite a struggle between transsexuals, transvestites, transgenderists and queers. I just hope we stand united against transphobia.

PS: A reminder: don’t forget to make comments to the comics on this site because… The 200th commentor gets featured in a cartoon! Just like in #116.

With “Scholars in LGBT & Gender Studies and transgender activists” challenging “the notion that people can change sex” and “instead” (mark well: “instead”!) proposing “an approach to embrace a fuller ‘transgender identity’ ”, I have very little confidence in the possibility of mutual understanding between all there is under the so-called transgender umbrella. My own sense of “belonging” is eroding rapidly.

We are NOT saying anyone HAS to want-to-belong. We’re saying that anyone who feels they belong under the assumed transgender umbrella should not be kicked out. There is a choice in wanting to belong or not. There is no choice involved if others kick you out.

Sounds a bit like “love it or leave it”. By the quoted activities I am perhaps not litterally kicked out out, but I nevertheless feel virtually erased in a space that once felt pretty “spacey”.

This is not about our cartoon , is it..??
(Nothing wrong with that, just checking).

Nee hoor, met de cartoon is niks mis, maar in combinatie met enkele recent events haalt-ie wel nogal wat overhoop bij mij persoonlijk :-).

I don’t want to sound bitter, but how many T*-people would visit such a monument outside sheduled events like the transgender memorial day? I think the trans-whatever-community differs quite a lot from the homo/lesbo/bi-community. Many of us are very busy in their own processes and when people have their body in the desired shape they will quit the gender-scene. In itself this is understandable, but when it comes to own memorial monuments this can be reason for less interest from our own group.

And yes, I know the problem of being kicked out of a transgender group just because I didn’t comply to the expectations about what (not) to do when you are transsexual.

On the contrary: a spot like this could be used -every- time something transphobic happens
+ ofcourse allies should be welcome as well. No need to ‘be’ or identitfy ‘as trans*’ for that.
